Episode 101: Managing Mom Rage and Emotional Dysregulation with Jocelyn Flores

Navigating the stormy side of parenting is no small feat. As a Latina mom, the journey comes with its own unique set of challenges. In a recent episode of my podcast, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Jocelyn Flores, a licensed marriage and family therapist, dedicated to empowering parents to become their children’s emotional safe havens. Together, we delved into the complexities of emotional dysregulation and the prevalent mom rage, especially within our culture.

Understanding Emotional Dysregulation

Have you ever found yourself yelling at your kids and immediately feeling guilty? Or maybe you’ve noticed patterns in your parenting that you swore you’d never repeat? You’re not alone. Jocelyn and I kicked off our conversation with these relatable scenarios, unraveling the concept of emotional dysregulation – a term that might sound foreign but is ever so present in our lives. It’s essentially when our emotions spiral out of control and we struggle to manage them effectively.

What is Regulation?

Interestingly, Jocelyn shared how she only truly grasped the concept of regulation a few years ago. Regulation is like managing or controlling something, and when we talk about emotional regulation, it’s about managing our feelings. When that balance tips, we experience dysregulation, leaving us overwhelmed and reactive.

The Impact of Our Nervous System

Jocelyn explained the fascinating workings of the nervous system, likening it to an intricate network that sends messages from our brain throughout our body. Stressors, whether they are positive or negative, impact this system significantly. Moms, especially, experience an overload due to the myriad of responsibilities pulling them in every direction. If you’re a mom, you know exactly what this feels like!

Breaking the Cycle of Trauma

The conversation took a profound turn when we discussed the influence of cultural upbringing. Jocelyn pointed out how generational parenting tools, sometimes intermixed with fear-based methods like “el cucuy” or “la chancla,” contribute to emotional dysregulation. It’s a cycle many of us are determined to break for the sake of our children and ourselves.

Tools for Emotional Regulation

  1. Mindful Breathing: Jocelyn emphasized the power of breath in calming our nervous systems. It’s a simple but effective tool to shift focus and bring about a sense of calm. By practicing mindful breathing, we can take significant strides toward better managing our reactions.
  2. Self-Compassion: We must be kind to ourselves. Parenting is hard enough without beating ourselves up for every mistake. Practicing compassion helps us reflect and adjust, rather than repeating cycles of guilt and anger.
  3. Setting Boundaries: Boundaries are critical, not just with others but with ourselves. Recognizing our limitations and acting accordingly can prevent burnout and ensure we are present and intentional in our parenting.
  4. Cultural Awareness: Understanding the impact of our cultural upbringing is crucial. By acknowledging and selectively embracing aspects of our cultura, we can choose what values and practices to pass down to our children.

Our discussion was eye-opening, reaffirming the importance of community and shared experiences. Jocelyn’s insights have inspired a more emotionally mindful and culturally aware parenting approach. Listening to this podcast episode will reassure you that you’re not isolated in your struggles, and with the right support and tools, you can be the parent you aspire to be.
