Episode 106: New Year, Same You: How to Embrace Intentional Madrehood

As we kick off this new year, I hope you’ve set out on a positive note, just like I did. I enjoyed a well-deserved two-week break from work, spending quality time with my family. It was wonderful to have my parents as they returned from Mexico and we had the opportunity to celebrate the holidays con familia. But now, it’s time to get back into the swing of things with an exciting year ahead, especially for my podcast and our growing Viva la Mami community.

Celebrating Community

There are thrilling developments happening at Viva la Mami that I can’t wait to share. For the first time, I’m creating an in-person experience for local mamas in the Chicago area. It’s an opportunity for Latina moms to come together, bond, and share their unique experiences. We have been accustomed to be in isolation as mamas and as people who have endured a pandemic, but the value of in-person community building is clearer than ever.

Rethinking Resolutions

As we venture into 2025, I’ve been pondering the pressure to transform ourselves with New Year’s resolutions. I’ve previously mentioned that I don’t believe in resolutions – these often force us to change into someone we’re not. Instead, what if we focused on nurturing who we already are? Let’s embrace our identities with intention rather than trying to fit into an idealized image.

Intentional Motherhood

In this podcast episode, I share a few tips on how we can embrace intentional motherhood. Here are the highlights:

1. Reimagine the Sacrificial Mom Narrative

We’ve inherited the belief that good moms put themselves last. It’s time to challenge this mindset. Taking care of yourself is revolutionary – it breaks generational patterns of maternal sacrifice. Remember, your well-being is just as important as everyone else’s in your family.

2. Create Sacred Space for Your Mental Health

Prioritizing mental health is essential, and we need to normalize therapy and self-care in our culture. Whether it’s therapy, meditation, or yoga, finding what helps you is crucial. Your mental health deserves the same care you give your family.

3. Embrace the Power of “No Me Importa”

We often carry the weight of others’ expectations. Let’s practice the art of “No me importa.” Focus on what truly matters to you and disregard the rest. Your peace is non-negotiable.

Community and Connection

I’m thrilled to announce that our Viva la Mami Collective is hosting its first Mami Meetup in Chicago, where we’ll write letters of intention for the year. This is not about resolutions but intentions that honor our reality and current season of life. We’re also launching a mentorship program, pairing moms to create lasting friendships. Looking Forward

I’m back in 2025 and excited to share this year with you. There are plans for guests and solo episodes as we redefine madrehood together. Thank you for sharing this time with me. Cheers to a year of intentionality and comunidad!

About Jessica Cuevas

Jessica is the founder and creator of Viva la Mami, LLC a community centered around Latina motherhood. Jessica created this platform after not finding empowering stories about experiences of Latina moms. She realized that there was a lack of representation in this space and felt there was a need for mamis to share their stories and to learn more about the nuances about motherhood through a cultural lens.

Viva la Mami’s mission is to empower the modern Latina mom to redefine the meaning of madrehood through education, story-telling, and cultural relevance all while bringing comunidad together.
