One of the most challenging things we, as Latina moms, do is setting boundaries with our family. Just the thought of combining “boundaries” and “familia” can make us uneasy. We treasure our family, seeing them as our support system and foundation. Yet, strong and loving boundaries are essential to nurture these precious relationships. So this is why I decided to share this episode with you!
Why Boundaries Matter
As mamis juggling careers, households, and relationships, we’re often seen as supermoms for always being available. But this expectation of constant accessibility can lead to drowning in commitments and feeling frustrated when our needs aren’t met. Without setting boundaries, our relationships can suffer from “boundary burnout.” For many Latina moms, the cultural belief that family always comes first makes boundary-setting even harder.
But remember, without them, you can’t be there fully for your loved ones. In our Balanced Madrehood program, we talk a lot about this. Many moms come in feeling overwhelmed by family demands, unsure of how to find time for themselves. By the end, they realize boundaries are not walls but bridges to better relationships.
Examples of Healthy Boundaries
Here are some practical examples of boundaries you can consider setting in your family life:
- Time Boundaries: Set specific working hours respected by family or designate personal time versus family time.
- Communication Boundaries: Don’t answer calls during dinner, set expectations on text replies, or keep certain topics private.
- Emotional Boundaries: Know where your emotional responsibilities end and others begin.
- Physical Boundaries: Respect personal space, nap times, or your comfort level with physical affection.
- Parenting Boundaries: Be clear on your role and other relatives’ roles in raising your kids.
- Financial Boundaries: Be clear about lending money, gift expectations, or shared expenses. Boundaries are all about setting clear expectations and creating a framework for relationships that are fulfilling without leaving you drained.
In Balanced Madrehood, we help identify and implement personalized strategies that fit your family’s needs.
Breaking Down Barriers
If boundaries are so great, why do we struggle with them? Here’s what we see as the top three roadblocks:
- Guilt: We’ve been taught that family should always come first. The guilt can be intense when you tell your mom you’re skipping a family dinner for some me-time.
- Fear of Misunderstanding: You worry your family will think you love them less. Will they see you as being “too American” for needing set work times?
- No Examples to Follow: Many of us didn’t see healthy boundaries growing up. If your mom or aunts never claimed personal time, you’re crafting a new path for your family.
In Balanced Madrehood, we tackle these challenges with practical tips that fit your family dynamics.
