Have you ever caught yourself saying something to your children that came straight from your own mother’s mouth – words you once swore you’d never repeat? Or found yourself enforcing a rule without really knowing why, other than “that’s just how it’s done”?
I’ve been there more times than I care to admit.
As busy moms juggling careers, households, relationships, and a million other responsibilities, we often parent on autopilot. We react to situations as they arise rather than responding intentionally based on what truly matters to us. In those moments of overwhelm – when the kids are fighting, dinner is burning, and work emails are piling up – it’s so easy to default to whatever parenting pattern is most deeply ingrained in us.
But what if there was a way to move from reactive to intentional parenting, even amid the beautiful chaos of motherhood?
The Power of Values-Based Parenting
In this podcast episode, I dive into something that has completely transformed my own madrehood journey: aligning my parenting approach with my core values.
Your values are the principles and beliefs that matter most to you—the ideals that guide your decisions and shape how you live. They’re the qualities you hope to embody and pass on to your children. For me, these include things like connection, respect, courage, and creativity. Your own value system will be uniquely yours, reflecting your personal experiences, cultural background, and individual priorities.
When your parenting approach aligns with your authentic values, three powerful shifts happen:
- You experience more confidence and less second-guessing. Instead of wondering if you’re making the “right” decision in any given situation, you can simply ask yourself, “Does this choice align with my values?” If it does, you can move forward with clarity.
- You create consistency for your children. When your actions consistently reflect your values, your children develop a clear understanding of what matters in your family. This consistency provides security and helps them internalize the values you hope to pass on.
- You parent more intentionally and less reactively. Rather than making decisions based on what’s easiest in the moment or what other people expect, you make choices that support your long-term vision for your family.
From Abstract to Action
One of the challenges I hear most often from the moms in my Balanced Madrehood community is that they know what matters to them in theory, but they struggle to put those values into practice in everyday parenting moments.
I get it. Values like “respect” or “resilience” can feel abstract and hard to translate into concrete actions, especially when you’re managing tantrums in the grocery store or negotiating bedtime for the fifth time.
Let me share some examples of how this translation from values to actions can work:
If respect is a core value for you, that might look like giving your children choices whenever possible, explaining the reasons behind your rules, and speaking to them in the same tone you’d use with other adults—even during difficult moments.
If connection is a primary value, you might prioritize regular one-on-one time with each child, create family rituals that bring you together, or put your phone away during key family moments to ensure you’re fully present.
If resilience matters to you, you might allow your children to experience the natural consequences of their actions, celebrate effort rather than just results, and share stories about times when you’ve overcome your own challenges.
The key is to think specifically about how each value shows up in daily interactions. For each core value, ask yourself: “What does this look like in our day-to-day family life? How would someone observing our family know that we value this?”
A Simple Practice to Start Today
If you take just one thing from this post (and the episode), let it be this simple exercise you can start today: The Values Reflection.
Each evening for the next week, take five minutes to reflect on your day through the lens of your values. Ask yourself:
- What parenting moments today aligned with my core values?
- When did my actions conflict with what matters most to me?
- What’s one thing I can do tomorrow to bring my parenting more in line with my values?
This simple reflection practice increases your awareness of how values show up in your daily parenting and helps you make small, intentional shifts toward greater alignment.
You might be surprised by how quickly this brief daily reflection transforms your approach to parenting decisions. Many mamás I work with report that this exercise alone significantly increases their confidence and satisfaction in their motherhood journey.
From Inherited to Intentional
One of the most powerful realizations that emerged in this episode is how many of us are parenting based on inherited expectations rather than our authentic values.
As Latina moms, we’ve received powerful messages about what it means to be a “good mother” from our families, our communities, and our culture. Some of these messages may align perfectly with our own values. Others might not resonate with the type of mother we truly want to be.
The beauty of values-based parenting is that it gives you permission to consciously choose which traditions and approaches you want to carry forward and which you want to adapt or leave behind. You can honor your heritage while also creating a parenting approach that feels authentic to you.
Creating Your Values-Aligned Madrehood
Aligning your parenting with your authentic values isn’t just beneficial for your children – it’s transformative for you too. When your actions as a mother reflect what truly matters to you, madrehood becomes less about meeting external expectations and more about creating a family life that feels deeply meaningful.
In this week’s podcast episode, I dive deeper into how to identify your core values, translate them into everyday actions, and handle the inevitable conflicts that arise when different values compete for priority.
