Episode 126: Season 5 Premiere

I’m back with the most exciting season of Viva la Mami yet, and I can barely contain my excitement about what we’re diving into together. If you’ve been with me on this journey, thank you for sticking around through all 120+ episodes. And if you’re new here, welcome to our familia – you’ve joined us at the perfect time.

Before I share what Season 5 is all about, I have to tell you about something that’s been weighing on my heart lately. I have huge news coming that I’m literally bursting to share with you, but newsletter subscribers will be the absolute first to know this Monday, May 26th. If you haven’t signed up yet, now is seriously the time – you don’t want to miss this announcement.

Life Updates from the Cuevas Household

Let me catch you up on what’s been happening in our casa. My boys are growing up so fast it makes my heart hurt. Mateo, my youngest, just turned two this past Monday (I can’t believe I wasn’t even pregnant with him when I started this podcast!), and Diego will be four and a half soon. Time absolutely flies when you’re in the thick of madrehood with two little ones who are four and under.

We’re still here in Chicago, still house hacking, still figuring it out one day at a time. But here’s what’s been beautiful – I’ve been watching my boys naturally gravitating toward our cultura in ways that just fill my soul.

We recently came back from a quick trip to Mexico, and I’m amazed at how connected they are with the language. Diego is now Spanish dominant and honestly, Spanish is all he’s interested in speaking right now – and I’m letting him fully embrace his cultura through language. Mateo is developing his language skills too, and watching both boys communicate with mis abuelitos, mis tíos, mis tías, and even my cousins back home in Mexico has been incredible.

They’re embracing this sense of identity that we often lose here in the United States. From wanting to hear Spanish songs like “1, 2, 3 Andrés” to asking questions about our family traditions, it’s such absolute joy to see them embrace their cultura the way our ancestors wanted us to keep holding on.

The Inspiration Behind Season 5

These moments got me thinking – how many of us Latina moms feel caught between two different worlds? Like we’re trying to honor where we come from while also embracing where we are? This realization became the heartbeat of what Season 5 is all about.

After over 120 episodes (which is wild to think about!), I’ve been reflecting on this incredible journey we’ve been on together. When I started Viva la Mami, it was purely from the heart – a labor of love born from my own need to see ourselves represented, to hear our stories, to feel less alone in this wild ride of being a Latina mom.

Look at us now! We have over 6,000 downloads and counting, and this community just keeps growing. But here’s the thing, and I’m being completely honest and transparent with you – what started as this passion project has grown into something that deserves to thrive as a sustainable platform. We’ve built something beautiful together, and I’m ready to take it to the next level.

The Power We Hold

Here’s something that’s been on my mind: Did you know that we as Latinas are the largest consumer group in the United States? We have incredible purchasing power – over $1.7 trillion annually. Yet how often do we direct that power back into our own comunidad? How often do we support the Latina-owned businesses that are creating exactly what we need?

I’ve poured my heart into this platform because I believe in the power of our community. I believe in the magic that happens when Latina moms support each other. And as we enter this new season, I want to share how you can be part of growing this movement – especially because some big changes are coming that will make this support even more meaningful.

Season 5: Reclaiming Our Cultura

Amiga, this season we are diving deep into something that I believe is at the core of our madrehood journey – reclaiming our cultura. I’m talking about those beautiful traditions, practices, and wisdom that our abuelas and mamás passed down to us. The ones we might have tucked away because they didn’t feel “modern enough” or because we weren’t sure how they fit into our lives as millennial mamás.

I’ve been thinking about the beauty within our cultura, whether your family is from Mexico, Guatemala, anywhere within Latin America, España, or honoring our African ancestors as well. What I’ve learned is that our cultura isn’t something we need to choose between – it’s something we can weave beautifully into our modern motherhood.

We don’t have to be ni de aquí, ni de allá. We can be de aquí Y de allá, and that’s our superpower.

This season, we’re going to explore how to raise bilingual children without the guilt of “not doing enough.” We’re going to talk about ancestral practices that can actually support us in our modern parenting journey – from traditional postpartum care to healing remedies our abuelas swore by. We’ll have conversations about how to pass down our stories, our language, and our values to our peques in ways that feel authentic and sustainable for our busy lives.

Trust me, some of the conversations we’ll be having this season are going to take on a whole new meaning with the big announcement I have coming.

What to Expect This Season

As always, you can expect our three types of episodes you’ve come to love:

Solo episodes where I’ll be sharing my own journey of reclaiming cultura in my household – the wins, the struggles, everything in between. I’ll be getting real about bilingual parenting, maintaining traditions when you feel disconnected from them, and finding our way back to practices that can actually serve us as modern mamás. Let me tell you, my upcoming adventure is going to give me SO much content to share with you about this journey.

Expert interviews with professionals who understand our unique experiences as Latina mamás. We’ll be talking to bilingual speech therapists, cultural historians, traditional healers, entrepreneurs who understand how we can embrace our cultura as bilingual, modern mamás, and child development experts who can give us practical advice for honoring our cultura while raising confident bicultural children.

VLM Spotlight episodes where real mamás just like you share their stories. This season, you’ll hear from mamás who are being intentional about raising bilingual children, mamás incorporating traditional healing into their families’ wellness routines, and mamás creating new traditions that blend the old with the new.

I’m being intentional about the guests and topics we discuss this season when it comes to reclaiming our cultura. It’s about embracing that superpower of bridging these two identities into one and recognizing what makes us unique as Spanish-speaking, Latina, bicultural, multicultural, or multilingual mamás.

Exciting News: We’re Coming to YouTube!

Here’s something exciting – starting this season, we’re expanding to YouTube with actual video content! I had a YouTube channel before where my audio episodes automatically converted, but now I’m dedicating the bandwidth to create intentional video content. You’ll be able to see facial expressions during personal stories and see our expert guests during interviews. If you prefer watching podcast episodes, now you’ll have that option, plus there will be additional content on YouTube beyond just the podcast.

When you share our content, you’re helping other mamís find their people. I also love when you slide into my DMs with topic suggestions – your voice literally shapes what we talk about here.
  2. Subscribe to our VLM newsletter. It’s completely free, comes to your inbox once a week, and subscribers are always first to know about special announcements. 3. Join the VLM Collective. This is our membership community – a sisterhood of Latina mamás who truly get it. We offer different membership tiers to meet you exactly where you are in your journey. We’re revamping the Collective to create deeper connections and more meaningful community experiences, especially with the changes coming to Viva la Mami.
  4. Check out our VLM merch and resources. When you shop with us, you’re directly supporting the growth of this platform. Every purchase helps us create more content, host more events, reach more mamís, and now produce quality video content for YouTube.

You’re Not Just Supporting a Podcast

Here’s what I really want you to understand: Your support – whether it’s a follow, a listen, a watch, a share, or a simple interaction – it all matters. You’re not just supporting a podcast or a business. You’re supporting a movement that says Latina mothers deserve spaces created specifically for us, by us.

When you engage with Viva la Mami, when you share our content, when you tell another mamí about us, you’re creating ripples. You’re helping build something that honors our experiences and elevates our voices.

If you’re feeling disconnected from your cultura, if you’re one of those mamás who feels like you don’t know enough to pass anything down – amiga, this season is especially for you. Reclaiming our cultura isn’t about being perfect or knowing absolutely everything. Even though I’m raising Spanish-dominant kids, the mental load of bilingual parenting is SO real.

It’s about being curious, asking questions, and taking small steps toward honoring our roots while growing into the mamás we want to be.

Let’s Do This Together

I am so excited to embark on this journey of reclaiming our cultura together. Remember, you don’t have to have all the answers. You don’t have to be the perfect keeper of traditions. You just have to be willing to explore, to learn, and to honor the beautiful blend of who you are and where you come from.

Our cultura is not something that holds us back – it’s something that propels us forward. It’s our strength, our wisdom, and our gift to our peques.

If you take one action from this post, make it signing up for our newsletter before Monday, May 26th. I cannot stress this enough – the announcement I have is going to change everything about how we approach this journey of reclaiming our cultura together.

Send me your stories, questions, or episode suggestions at podcast@vivalamami.com. Tell me about cultural practices you’re curious about, traditions you want to reclaim but don’t know how, or ways you’re already weaving cultura into your madrehood journey.

¡Vamos amiga! Let’s reclaim our cultura together, one episode at a time.

About Jessica Cuevas

Jessica is the founder and creator of Viva la Mami, LLC a community centered around Latina motherhood. Jessica created this platform after not finding empowering stories about experiences of Latina moms. She realized that there was a lack of representation in this space and felt there was a need for mamis to share their stories and to learn more about the nuances about motherhood through a cultural lens.

Viva la Mami’s mission is to empower the modern Latina mom to redefine the meaning of madrehood through education, story-telling, and cultural relevance all while bringing comunidad together.
