For the longest time, I never saw myself moving abroad. As a first-generation Latina mom, my only experience with international travel growing up was going to Mexico to visit family. I didn’t take European vacations or globe-trot with my parents. That wasn’t our reality.
It wasn’t until I started my career in higher education that I got the opportunity to travel, and even then, it was mostly as a chaperone for students, not for my own exploration.
But now? I’m living in Mexico with my family, and I’m watching a beautiful wave of parents, especially Latina moms, make the same decision to move or travel abroad with their children. And you know what I realized? We’re not being talked about.
The Gap in Representation
The travel and expat spaces are flooded with content, but where are the voices of mothers? Specifically, where are the voices of Latina mothers who are moving abroad not as digital nomads seeking adventure, but as women returning to their roots, reconnecting with their heritage, and choosing a different life for their families?
I see moms going back to their homelands, whether it’s the country their family came from or somewhere completely new. I see them making the brave choice to not just travel, but to bring their entire families along. And I think that’s the part that deserves to be elevated.
These mamas are raising global citizens. They’re immersing their children in different cultures and languages. They’re creating opportunities that many of us never had growing up. And their stories deserve to be heard.
That’s why I’m launching a new series on the Viva la Mami podcast called Mamis Abroad.
What to Expect from Mamis Abroad
In this series, I’ll be interviewing mamas who have either traveled extensively with their families or moved abroad entirely. These episodes won’t drop on a strict weekly schedule; they’ll come out as I complete interviews, but each one will give you real insights into what it’s like to take your family across borders.
You’ll hear from moms who:
- Moved abroad for a year or indefinitely
- Traveled extensively during summer breaks with their kids
- Grew their families in countries outside their homeland
- Made the permanent leap from visiting to living abroad
My goal is simple: to give you representation, inspiration, and practical knowledge. Because if these mamas did it, you can too.
I can share my experience living in Mexico all day long, but I know my perspective is just one piece of the puzzle. I want to create space for other mamis to share their unique journeys, their challenges, their wins, and their insider tips.
Why This Matters (Especially for Latina Moms)
Here’s the thing: most of the online spaces for people moving abroad are dominated by expat voices, often grinog voices. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, our experience as Latina moms repatriating to Mexico is fundamentally different.
I’m part of several Facebook groups for expats moving to Mexico, and honestly? I don’t feel like there’s space for people like us. People who aren’t just looking for a cheaper cost of living or a remote work destination. People who are reverse migrating. People who come from mixed-status households. People who want to be closer to family, reconnect with their culture, or provide their children with a bilingual, bicultural upbringing.
We have historically been silent, and it’s time for that to change.
I’m Building a Community, And I Want You In It!
After receiving countless DMs and messages from mamis like you asking about our move to Mexico, I’ve decided to create something I wish I had when we were planning our move: a free online community specifically for mamas moving to Mexico.
This isn’t another generic expat group. This is a brave space where:
- You won’t be judged for your reasons for moving
- You can ask questions without feeling like you’re being talked down to
- You’ll find like-minded mamas who understand the nuances of repatriating
- You can share your fears, concerns, and excitement openly
Because let’s be real, motherhood is isolating enough! Add in the idea of moving to another country, and the judgment from family members, friends, and coworkers? It can feel overwhelming.
You don’t have to do this alone.
How I Can Support You
In addition to the free community, I’m also offering:
- Free 30-Minute Cafecito Chats to get to know each other briefly
- 1:1 One-Hour Moving to México Consultations, where I can answer your specific questions and discuss your goals to move to México with your family!
I’ve become pretty knowledgeable through our own experience, and I don’t want that information to stay locked in my DMs. Some of your questions are complex and deserve more than a quick Instagram reply. If you’re willing to invest in yourself and your family’s move, I’m here to guide you.
I also have digital products available on my website if you want to get started on dual citizenship on your own.
Our Voices Matter
For too long, we’ve stayed quiet. We’ve consumed content that doesn’t fully represent us. We’ve navigated Facebook groups where our specific concerns, like our mixed-status families, our cultural connections, and our reasons for moving are misunderstood or ignored.
But this is our moment.
Whether you’re thinking about moving to Mexico for the summer, for a year, or permanently, or whether you’re doing it to be closer to deported family members, to give your kids a bilingual education, or simply because you want to reconnect with your roots, you deserve support, community, and resources that actually speak to your experience.
I’m so excited to share the upcoming Mamis Abroad episodes with you. I hope these conversations inspire you, empower you, and remind you that you’re not alone in this journey.
Let’s celebrate madrehood the way it should be, not the way the media or comedians have stereotyped Latina moms to be. Let’s raise our voices, share our wisdom, and pave the way for the mamas coming after us.
Join the community. Listen to the stories. And know that if you’ve ever dreamed of moving abroad with your family, you absolutely can!
Show Notes
In this episode, I’m introducing a brand new series called Mamis Abroad and sharing some exciting updates about resources I’m creating specifically for mamás like you who are considering moving to Mexico with your family.
I’ve noticed a serious gap in representation when it comes to Latina moms who are traveling or moving abroad. Most of the content out there is centered around digital nomads and expats, but what about those of us who are reverse migrating, going back to our roots, to the countries our families came from? That’s exactly why I’m creating this series and building a community where our voices aren’t silenced anymore.
What You’ll Hear:
- Why there’s a lack of representation for Latina moms in the moving abroad space
- The difference between being an expat and repatriating to Mexico, and why our experiences deserve their own space
- How joining my new free online community can support you if you’re considering moving to Mexico with your family
- Resources I’m offering to answer your specific questions about dual citizenship, schools, pets, moving your car, and more
- Why raising global citizens matters and how these brave mamis are paving the way for future generations

About Jessica Cuevas

Jessica is the founder and creator of Viva la Mami, LLC a community centered around Latina motherhood. Jessica created this platform after not finding empowering stories about experiences of Latina moms. She realized that there was a lack of representation in this space and felt there was a need for mamis to share their stories and to learn more about the nuances about motherhood through a cultural lens.
Viva la Mami’s mission is to empower the modern Latina mom to redefine the meaning of madrehood through education, story-telling, and cultural relevance all while bringing comunidad together.
