Episode 58: Mami, Take Care of You First!

I want you to think about the last time you practiced self care.

When was the last time you took care of yourself? When did you prioritize on yourself in a way that didn’t make you feel guilty or ashamed? As Latina women, we overlook this type of practice. Ever since we were little girls, we were conditioned to put others first. We’ve seen this with our mamás and abuelitas where they always put themselves last.

But with the modern world we’re living in and a new generation of millennial moms, are we still upholding traditional practices by not prioritizing on ourselves?

In this episode, I share the importance of self-care, particularly for Latina moms, and challenges societal and cultural norms that prioritize family and others over individual well-being.

We’ll get to understand what self-care is and how to prioritize our well-being in order to establish a good relationship with ourselves and honor our body and soul. I offer practical self-care strategies, including setting boundaries with toxic individuals, getting enough sleep, practicing mindfulness, and scheduling personal time.

Let’s break the cycles of putting ourselves last and prioritize ourselves to become more patient, present, and joyful mamis.

About Jessica Cuevas

Jessica is the founder and creator of Viva la Mami, LLC a community centered around Latina motherhood. Jessica created this platform after not finding empowering stories about experiences of Latina moms. She realized that there was a lack of representation in this space and felt there was a need for mamis to share their stories and to learn more about the nuances about motherhood through a cultural lens.

Viva la Mami’s mission is to empower the modern Latina mom to redefine the meaning of madrehood through education, story-telling, and cultural relevance all while bringing comunidad together.
