Episode 64: How To Set Boundaries With Your Latino Family

This episode is all about setting boundaries, especially with our amazing, but sometimes exagerada familia. We all know and love them, but sometimes their well-meaning advice or uninvited opinions can feel overwhelming.

For example, maybe your mamá keeps stopping by unannounced, or your tía [aunt] insists on giving unsolicited advice on how to raise your baby. We’ve all been there, mamas! But here’s the thing – setting boundaries is not a sign of disrespect. It’s a crucial act of self-love! So on this episode, I’m going to share with you key steps on how you can set boundaries with your family without feeling guilty and without disrespecting them! So stay tuned on this episode on how you can set boundaries con tu familia.

Setting boundaries allows you to:

  • Protect your mental and emotional well-being.
  • Reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Show up as the best version of yourself for your family.
  • Maintain healthy relationships with your loved ones.

Now, I know what you’re thinking – but setting boundaries with our familia can feel tricky, right?  In our tight-knit Latino cultures, there’s a strong emphasis on collectivism, putting the needs of the family first. So how do we navigate this?

Here are some tips for communicating boundaries with love and respect:

  • The Art of “Te quiero, pero…”:  Instead of accusatory language, focus on “I” statements that express your feelings and needs.
  • Lead with Appreciation:  Acknowledge your family’s good intentions and express gratitude for their love and support.
  • Focus on Solutions:  Don’t just say no, propose alternative solutions that meet everyone’s needs.

Setting boundaries with love and respect is an essential act of self-love that allows you to be the best version of yourself for your familia.

Remember, it’s okay to prioritize your own well-being. You are worthy of having your needs met.
