Episode 88: Redefining Consumerism: A Conversation with Marisa Ikpoh from The Give-n-Receive Inc.

Last month, I had the pleasure of collaborating with two Latina-owned businesses, The Give-n- Receive Inc. and Blooming Bellies, for a pop-up event aimed at the Chicago community. During this event, I was honored to interview mamis about their madrehood journey on-site. This interview is the first of three where I had the opportunity talk with Marisa Ikpoh and capture her inspiring journey.

Marisa is the founder of The Give-n-Receive Inc., who has created a unique community initiative: a free pop-up boutique offering gently used clothing and accessories to people of all ages, genders, and sizes. In our interview, she shared the challenges she faced, from overcoming initial fears to mobilizing community support. Her mission focuses on providing quality clothing without costs, addressing issues of consumerism, and promoting sustainability.

A Family-Driven Vision

Marisa’s story is deeply intertwined with her family. As a mami of four daughters, she involves her family in the operation of the boutique. From organizing pop-up events to personally sorting through donations, her family plays a crucial role in the success of the initiative.

Marisa told me how the notion of The Give-n-Receive came to her several years ago but was initially tabled due to fear. Reviving the idea this year, she set out to make it a reality with the community’s help. Her determination led to the first event in February, and they are now booked through December 2024.

Changing Perceptions of Thrifting

One of the key aspects of The Give-n-Receive is changing the perception of thrifting. Marisa emphasizes that her pop-up boutique offers quality items, ensuring that shoppers do not have to deal with stained or damaged goods. She aims to turn thrifting into a desirable, fashionable, and financially sensible option for everyone.

Marisa’s dedication extends to teaching her daughters the value of repurposing and sustainability. By instilling in them the importance of not chasing trends and understanding the value of a dollar, she prepares the next generation for responsible consumerism.

Future Goals and Expanding Impact

Marisa has ambitious plans for the future. She envisions going mobile with her boutique to reach more people across various communities. Her goal is to have a fleet of mobile boutiques, allowing The Give-n-Receive to maintain its familial, welcoming atmosphere while expanding its reach.

Redefining Madrehood and Leadership

We also discussed how initiatives like The Give-n-Receive allow moms like us to redefine madrehood. By creating such a community-focused project, Marisa sets a powerful example for her daughters and other women. She demonstrates that with focus, effort, and community support, any vision can be manifested into reality.

Marisa and her organization exemplify the power of community support and sustainable practices. Through The Give-n-Receive, she not only provides essential items to those in need but also educates and empowers the next generation. Her story is a testament to the impact one individual can have on their community and the importance of redefining consumerism in our society.
